SOUTH WEST IN BLOOM AWARDS 2018

Representatives from Falmouth attended the Southwest in Bloom awards in Yeovil and came away with a number of prestigious awards. Falmouth was awarded the RHS Gold medal in the most competitive category of the day and were up against many other towns, 5 of which also achieved Gold medal standard. Falmouth came out as overall winners and awarded the Portman Cup which should see Falmouth entered in the Champions of Champions category for 2019. Falmouth shared the Sargent Trophy awarded to the town ‘for outstanding effort and dedication from a main entry”.

Safer, Greener, Cleaner Campaign

Falmouth Town Council is drawing a line against graffiti as part of its Safer, Cleaner, Greener public information campaign. irresponsible flyposting not only deface property and undermine Falmouth’s reputation as a creative hub, but also waste valuable resources that could be better invested in the local community. The council is a huge supporter of the visual arts, with a legacy stretching from JMW Turner and Henry Scott Tuke through to the edgy experimentation of Falmouth University students and the contemporary artists that the town’s award-winning art gallery regularly showcases.

RBL Great Pilgrimage 90 Event

The Penryn British Legion met the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Tony Parker, to present the town of Falmouth with a pennant as a reminder of the Grand Pilgrimage that the Branch attended on behalf of Penryn and Falmouth. The event marked 90 years since the original Great Pilgrimage in 1928, which saw 11,000 World War One veterans and war widows visit the battlefields of the Somme in France and Ypres in Belgium, a decade after the conflict ended.

Environmental Education and Enforcement Officer

Job opportunity with the Council’s Town Team : Environmental Education and Enforcement Officer
Grade 3/4 SCP 14 – 21 (£17,681 - £20,541) pro rata of 21 hours per week

The Council is changing the way it provides environmental services and is seeking to recruit the above role. Working closely with groups and partners including Cornwall Council, Town Management, Cormac Solutions, Universities, waste contractors, the Police, community groups and others this role will assist the delivery of education and awareness campaigns to the public.

Mayoral Reception for Celticup Sailors

The Mayor, Councillor Grenville Chappel, greeted a group of sailors who were taking part in the Celticup Race, with a reception in the Council Chamber. The Celticup is an annual yacht race from Lorient in France to Falmouth and back again. Over 25 boats took part in this years race which had an international feel to it with sailors from Spain, Portugal and Ireland as well as the many French participants. The sailors enjoyed a pasty lunch and Dynamite Valley Brewing Company provided them with a taste of the local beer.

FALMOUTH FLIES THE FAIRTRADE FLAG

Falmouth has successfully retained its status as a Fairtrade Town. One of only two Cornish Towns to enjoy Fairtrade status and the first Cornish Town to receive the community recognition back in 2005 from the Fairtrade Foundation. Falmouth has now been re-accredited in 2018. The Town has demonstrated a commitment to supporting Fairtrade and using licensed products with the Fairtrade mark.

This international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities.
