Boslowick By-Election

Following the resignation of Mike Varney the vacancy for the Boslowick Ward of the Town Council will be filled by an election on 27th August 2009.

Polling stations will be St Mary’s School and Bosvale Community Centre but not Falmouth Golf Club on this occasion.

Those wishing to contest the election must complete and return nomination papers by noon on Friday 31st July 2009, these are available from the Deputy Returning Officer at Carrick House, Truro or the Town Council Offices.

Cemetery of the Year Awards

Falmouth Town Council enters Swanpool Cemetery into Cemetery of the Year Awards under the Cemeteries between 5 to 15 acres category.

The Town Council’s Sexton, Lee Mitchell, has entered the Cemetery into four award categories, Award for Community Involvement, ICCM Award for most Improved Cemetery and ICCM Award for Cemetery Operatives Team of the Year.

6 Castle Drive

Falmouth Town Council is to host a public meeting on Monday (8th) ahead of a meeting of its planning committee.

Members of the public are invited to have their say on plans to demolish a bungalow on Falmouth’s Castle Drive and replace it with two detached homes. The existing bungalow was built in the 1960s and it is claimed it fails to make a positive contribution to the conservation area.

The two homes proposed for the site would incorporate “designs and style that complement and enhance the street scene, depicting characteristics and styles of the conservation area.”

Launch of the Falmouth and Penryn Community Plan public consultation

This week every household in Falmouth and Penryn should receive a new copy of the 'Fathom' newspaper published by Falmouth Town Council.

This new edition however is rather special, as the paper has been given over in its entirety to a public consultation on the proposals for the Falmouth and Penryn Community Plan.

Community Plan Co-ordinator Ray Tovey said ‘this is a real opportunity for residents of Falmouth and Penryn to advise how they want to see their communities develop and grow. I hope they will grasp the opportunity’.

Admiral Nelson Site Public Session

The new plans to redevelop the former Admiral Nelson pub in Falmouth are to be discussed by town councillors on Monday evening (18th May) ahead of the planning committee meeting, though, a public session will be held to enable residents to air their views.

It is expected that members of the Admiral Nelson Action Group will be attending the meeting, as will representatives of developers, the Acorn Property Group.

The now derelict site in Bar Road has long been the centre of controversy as several different companies have attempted to redevelop it.

Falmouth Town Shoppers Shuttle Bus

Falmouth Town Shoppers Shuttle to continue beyond April.

Following a special meeting held last night to brief Councillors on the Falmouth Shoppers’ Shuttle Bus, there was a unanimous decision from all Councillors present to underwrite the expenses of the service until at least the end of June.

Since starting in January of this year, the service has carried over 12,000 passengers and has become an established part of the Town’s infrastructure.

Falmouth Rugby Club

Members of Falmouth Town Council met with Committee Members of Falmouth Rugby Club recently to discuss the future development of the club at the Recreation Ground.

The ground had been the subject of a proposed housing development scheme previously and the Council were keen to ensure it was protected as an open space in the town.

Falmouth says “YES!” to Business Improvement District

A Business Improvement District will now be formed in Falmouth following a “yes” vote from the town.
The result was delivered today (Friday March 13), after a year of work by members of the BID steering group to develop the proposal.

Volunteers from businesses across the town who have donated their time and energies to get the scheme off the ground celebrated the “Yes” vote at the St Michael’s Hotel, where the news was announced.

A total of 54% of businesses took part in the ballot – 218 of the 407 eligible to vote.

Falmouth Town Council has been recognised as a Quality Council

Town Mayor, Councillor Varney, stated ‘I am absolutely thrilled that the Town Council has received this award. The Council is the closest to the community, listens to its views and needs and articulates them to others and continues to have a central role in improving the quality of life. This is a perfect time for such recognition given the change to a Unitary Council, as this gives more weight to our call for assets and services to be delivered at a local level’.
