Out of Paper
A simple piece of paper is fundamental to artistic practice. In the form of a sketchbook, it is a space for ideas to develop and as a surface it holds drawings, paintings and prints. However, some artists go beyond making works on it and instead make works out of it. This exhibition looks at how paper is used as a medium and the many interesting and exciting forms it can take.
The exhibition has been developed in partnership with the ‘Illustration and the Paper Artefact’ conference at Falmouth School of Art, Falmouth University. The conference explored the different contexts in which the material nature of paper enhances illustration processes. On display here you will see several works created for an exhibition held during the conference, alongside historic paper objects from Falmouth University Archives.
Looking beyond the realms of illustration we showcase works by Cornwall-based artists who are exploring concepts and form using techniques such as cutting, folding, collaging and pulping. We have also linked with Paper Artist Collective which brings together artists from around the world who have a shared passion for creating beautiful things from paper. Finally, we had to include examples of the gallery’s papier-mâché sculpture collection, including the return of ‘Mrs Murkin – The Gallery Attendant’!
Thanks to Carolyn Shapiro, Rose Forshall, Carole Green, Rowena Hubman, Leng Parsons, Samantha Quinn and all the artists and lenders for supporting this exhibition.
