Tremough Campus Sports Centre offers free sessions for the public

On Saturday 2 July 2011, the state-of-the-art Sports Centre at the Tremough Campus in Penryn is throwing open its doors to show local people the many ways in which they can benefit from attending classes or becoming members.

Whether you are ‘of a certain age’ and require some gentle moves to improve your posture and general mobility; have returned to Falmouth from university for a summer break and are looking for a challenging new form of exercise; would like a free personal training session or have a sports injury that you’d like advice on, there will be something for every age and level of fitness on offer between 9am and 5pm on the day – and even free crèche facilities at the nearby Flying Start nursery (on a first-come, first-served basis by ‘phoning the Tremough Campus Sports Centre on 01326 370770) to enable busy Mums and Dads to enjoy a little ‘me’ time and try something new.

“Many local people think that our facilities are just for students and this is our way of showing that everyone is welcome at Tremough,” explains Interim Manager of the Sports Centre, Helen Davison. “The Tremough Campus Sports Centre not only offers some of the best facilities in the county, but also a highly-experienced staff team with a broad range of expertise. What makes us different from other sports facilities is the fact that our team are all qualified personal trainers as well as gym instructors, able to offer a bespoke, flexible service to meet every requirement.”

On the day, there will be free classes in Spinning, Boxercise and Yoga in the Studio and on the outdoor Multi-Use Games Area as well as Circuit Training. For those wishing to try something new, the Tremough Campus Sports Centre is the only facility in Cornwall to offer Kettlebells classes, which involves using a cast iron weight resembling a cannonball with a handle to perform ballistic exercises that combine cardiovascular, strength and flexibility training.

“This form of exercise originated in Russia and has gained increasing popularity among elite athletes and rugby professionals in recent years,” comments Duty Manager, Rob Smaldon. “If you are looking for a new form of exercise to build strength and endurance, particularly in the lower back, legs, and shoulders, and increase grip strength, then why not come along to our open day and give it a try?”
Visitors to the open day will also be able to experience one-to-one training on the Vibrogym, which is scientifically proven to stimulate fat loss, increase metabolism, reduce cellulite, enhance mobility and improve bone density.

“Twelve minutes on the Vibrogym equates to an hour-long workout on traditional equipment, and it provides a particularly attractive regime for the 55-60 plus age group because it is proven to help with health problems such as osteoporosis and multiple sclerosis, and to reduce pain in the joints,” adds Helen Davison.

Local registered osteopath, Lizzie Bird, will also be on hand to offer advice and 20-minute sports massages, and there will be an outdoor barbecue to promote healthier eating.

“Whether you are looking for weight loss, increased mobility, better posture or a personal fitness regime, we have the drive, enthusiasm and skills to help you,” says Helen Davison. “Our rates are competitive, you don’t have to become a member, and you can use our facilities and attend our classes to fit in with your busy lives. We also offer free parking out of term time and a perfect opportunity for you to meet new people.”

“Participating in sporting activities is a great way to interact with people from different walks of life and strengthen the bonds of community,” concludes Campus Services Director, Lucy Black. “We already enjoy a successful sports partnership with Penryn College, which encourages school pupils, university students and local residents to create teams and compete in leagues, and plan to introduce running and orienteering routes across the campus in the coming months, thanks to new funding from Sports England. We welcome every opportunity to share our facilities and encourage local people to feel a sense of ownership about their university campus and hope to welcome as many of you as possible to the Sports Centre Open Day on 2 July.”

Visitors to the Open Day can book up to three free activities each by checking what is available in advance on www.tremoughservices.com/sportscentre and clicking on the Special Offers & Promotions icon. They should then email their preferred activities to gym@tremoughservices.com or ‘phone them through on 01326 370770.

The Tremough Campus is shared and jointly managed by University College Falmouth and the University of Exeter in an arrangement that is unique in the UK.

The University of Exeter and University College Falmouth are founding partners in the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC), a unique collaboration between six universities and colleges to promote regional economic regeneration through Higher Education, funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One and Convergence), the South West Regional Development Agency and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall Council.
