Sir Alan Langlands Chief Executive of HEFCE celebrates Falmouth University’s new status - 31st May 2013

A series of events to mark Falmouth University’s inauguration has begun, with civic, education and business leaders from Cornwall celebrating a milestone in the region’s history.

Guest of honour Sir Alan Langlands, Chief Executive of the Higher Education Funding Council for England, distinguished representatives from the towns of Falmouth and Penryn, students and staff united together in a memorable procession through the streets.

Rev. Stephen Tudgey welcomed ‘One and All’ at King Charles the Martyr Church. A dedication ceremony followed that included work from talented students and readings in both Cornish and English.

Later that day afternoon tea was served in the refectory at the University’s Falmouth Campus. The day ended with a spectacular Gala dinner at Pendennis Castle.

Speaking at the inauguration of Falmouth University last Friday evening, Sir Alan Langlands said:

“The energy, creativity and professionalism of the students at the University is obvious to everyone here today: students make universities, and Falmouth’s mission to ‘give creative minds inspiring futures’ will be its hallmark.”

He also said: “The UK has the largest creative industries sector in Europe and it is here and in similar economies around the world that the artists, designers, performers, writers and media experts from the University will find their place and make their mark.”
Finally, he paid tribute to the staff of the University and the representatives from the wider community in Cornwall who took part in the inauguration ceremony: “who combined their talents, experience, ambition and support to ensure that Falmouth takes its places in the unfolding history of European Universities.”

Celebrations will continue during the summer and throughout the County with a series of events.
