Grenville Chappel Awarded Council Plaque

The Town Mayor was surprised to be the subject of a presentation himself at the Council meeting this week. Deputy Mayor Councillor Tony Parker presented Grenville Chappel with a Council plaque to mark his efforts as Co-ordinator for the Beacon Regeneration Project.

Councillor Parker stated that in 1995 the Beacon and Old Hill Estate was one of the most deprived and poorest in Europe, with a multitude of social problems. A small Group got together and decided that needed to change. The Beacon Regeneration Project and Tenants Association were formed as a pioneering and national award winning initiative that breathed new life and turned the community around by empowering its residents. Sadly that initiative has come to a natural end and the Council wanted to recognise Grenville who had been the project co-ordinator since its inception.

Grenville thanked the Council and said although he was sad to see the project end he was proud of what it had achieved and that work would go on in other ways. He also thanked the Council for enabling the crucial local Benefits Advice Service to continue.
