The family of former Councillor Ted Smith visited the Mayor, Councillor Geoffrey Evans CC, recently to present Mr Smith’s Freedom scroll and casket to the Town Council in his memory and for safe keeping.  Ted Smith was a Councillor with Falmouth Borough Council for over 35 years and he was made a Freeman of Falmouth  in 1973 in recognition of the eminent services rendered by him to the Borough.  Ted Smith lived all his life in Falmouth and as well as working at the Cinema in St George’s Arcade he did his apprenticeship at the Docks and was awarded the Boilermaker’s Union Gold Medal.  He played rugby for Redruth and Cornwall.

Pictured with the Mayor are Ted Smith’s daughters Jean Williams and Sylvia Cowie. The Mayor said ‘It is a great honour to receive the casket and scroll of Ted Smith who was made a Freeman of Falmouth in 1973.  It is a personal privilege to receive this back as it was Ted who presented me with the Mayoral Chain when I first became Mayor in 1976 and the following years of my mayoralty in the 1970’s.  The casket will now be kept in memory of him in the Mayor’s Parlour.’
