The Society is a remarkably powerful organisation which forms international links, all because of Camellias. The ICS chose Cornwall as the location for the main congress activities due to the county’s wonderful gardens and especially its Camellias.

The proceedings opened with a ‘Welcome to Cornwall’ cream tea held at Trewithen and Lady Mary Holborrow, Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, welcomed the congress and a response was given by the ICS President, Greg Davis, from Texas. The Town Mayor, Councillor Mike Varney was also in attendance.

The Town Mayor was also invited to a planting ceremony at Fox Rosehill Gardens where a collection of camellia varieties bred in twelve of the countries represented by the 196 delegates of the congress was handed over to the gardens. There are two more plants to add to the collection, plus labels and an information board which is currently being prepared by Carrick District Council’s Parks and Gardens Team.

Councillor Varney, stated ‘It was an honour to welcome the ICS Congress to Falmouth and it was wonderful to meet with so many delegates from such a broad range of countries. International links have been formed and the Town has benefited from the visit of almost 200 delegates. I was overwhelmed by the warm reception I received throughout the proceedings and it is wonderful to have a memento of the ICS Congress visit to Falmouth in Fox Rosehill Gardens’.

The delegation included government and tourism officials from both Krume City in Japan and Pontevedra in Northern Spain. Delegations from the cities of Dali and Chuxiong in China were also present.

The congress ended on a high with a Gala Dinner at the Falmouth Hotel with the Town Mayor, in his Cornish kilt, concluding his speech with a Cornish Song.
