Falmouth Rugby Club

Members of Falmouth Town Council met with Committee Members of Falmouth Rugby Club recently to discuss the future development of the club at the Recreation Ground.

The ground had been the subject of a proposed housing development scheme previously and the Council were keen to ensure it was protected as an open space in the town.

Members of the Club advised that there was no intention to move away from the Recreation Ground. The Club had undertaken some upgrading and had plans for development of the Club House and changing rooms. These would be continued upon resolution of outstanding rent and lease conditions issues with Cornwall Council who owned the site. Grant funders would need the guarantee of a long lease.

The Council wished to support the Club in seeking an extended lease provided there is no financial gain for the Rugby Club, which would prevent any development other than that appropriate to the growth of the club, and would assist the Club in releasing its own development proposals.

Town Mayor, Mike Varney said ‘I and those Councillors present were very enthused following the meeting with the Rugby Club, I was convinced that their commitment was to remain at the Recreation Ground. All present agreed it was a protected open space and it was imperative that we all worked together to raise the standard of the facilities. At present there are twelve rugby and football teams from all over the town using the site’.

Club Chairman, John Body said ‘Falmouth Rugby Club Committee looks forward to working with Falmouth Town Council and the new Cornwall Council to safeguard the future of rugby and sport in Falmouth’.
