Britain in Bloom Awards

Falmouth claims a gold award, a top trophy and praise for one of its primary schools at this years Britain in Bloom Awards.

Falmouth Town Council has been working in partnership with Cornwall Council's Environmental Service, local schools and community groups to build upon last years success and this year they have scooped a gold award in the Portman Cup, the category for large towns.

In addition, the town's Gyllyngdune and Queen Mary gardens were named the "best in the west" and won the Abbis Trophy, an award nominated at the judges' discretion.

King Charles School was also recognised for its contribution to the town, taking home a certificate of merit in the neighbourhood awards.

The awards ceremony was held in Yeovil earlier this month and was attended by the Town Mayor, Councillor Geoffrey Evans, Town Clerk Mark Williams and representatives from Cornwall Coucnil and King Charles School.

This is only the second time Falmouth has entered the awards which clearly represents what can be achieved when local authorities work with communities and partnering organisations.

The Falmouth in Bloom group would like to hear from individuals or groups interested in getting involved in next year's entry and anyone willing to give up some time to help organise the town's application or carry out activities such as bulb planting and litter picking, should get in touch with Cornwall Council’s Parks and Gardens Team or Falmouth Town Council.
