Bee Happy Event - Thursday 18th April 2013 - Tremough Campus

On Thursday 18 April, local residents are invited to the Tremough Campus, Penryn to make and fly a swarm of bee kites as part of Falmouth University student Imogen Bone’s Bee Happy project.

Bee Happy is a collaborative community art project that raises awareness of the declining bee population through the art of kite making and flying.

Imogen Bone will run bee kite workshops from 10am to 2pm in Falmouth University’s Academy for Innovation & Research (AIR). For those who take part in the workshops, there will be group ‘swarm’ kite flying session at 2pm.

Bee Happy is the first Student Stream project to support Confluence 2013, the new public programme of site-specific art for the Tremough Campus in association with the University of Exeter and Falmouth University, who share and jointly manage the site.

Imogen Bone, who is studying Falmouth University’s MA Art & Environment course, was inspired by the way in which bees work as a community to develop a project where groups and individuals could come together to create a temporary event that would help raise awareness of the dwindling bee population. It is estimated that the worldwide population of honeybees has fallen by a quarter of a trillion in the last four years, which has been linked to a number of factors including climate change.

During the Bee Happy event, bee-keeping expert, Matt Pitt and members of the Falmouth and Exeter Students’ Union societies, BeeSoc and EcoSoc will be providing information and ideas for positive action to help ensure the future of bee populations.

Visitors will also be able to take away free bee-friendly seeds that have been kindly donated by Tamar Organics in Launceston.

Confluence Student Stream is a showcase for the talent and creativity of students from Falmouth University and the University of Exeter in Cornwall. Confluence 2013 will include a curated programme of installations and interventions that explore relationships between art, technology and the environment around us.

Everyone is invited to join the Bee Happy swarm and take part in promoting positive actions for our future. It is advisable to come early as kite numbers are limited.
