Wartime photos and memories of French landing are sought.
In the run up to the 70th anniversary of General Charles De Gaulle’s 18th June 1940 appeal to the Free French to join him in London to continue the struggle against the Nazis, we have been asked by our French “twin” Douarnenez in Brittany to mount a search for photographs and memories of any local contact with the French who landed along the Cornish coastline between 18th June 1940 and 1945. At least 140 French fishing boats landed mainly at Falmouth, Mevagissey, Newlyn and Penzance and their story will be recalled at a special exhibition next year during the International Maritime Festival at Douarnenez in July. What we are hoping, is to unearth old photo albums and record reminiscences which can join the French audio-visual presentation at the exhibition.
